A strange little side quest
My Cake may feel immediate, but the ideas around food history have been evolving for a very long time. Nancy Johnson patented a hand-cranked ice-cream freezer in 1843 that used an inner churning chamber surrounded by ice. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: During much of the 19th century in the United States, visibly painted cosmetics became socially unacceptable even though beauty practices never disappeared. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
