A strange little side quest
Monochrome Mahjongg may feel immediate, but the ideas around puzzles have been evolving for a very long time. Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984 after drawing inspiration from pentomino puzzles, then simplified the idea around shapes made from four squares. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: Women competed in Olympic archery as early as 1904, making it one of the early Olympic sports to include women. That gives Monochrome Mahjongg a little more company than it first appears to have.
