A strange little side quest
Put Hoop Kings next to the history of basketball and a few unexpected connections appear. Men's basketball became an Olympic medal sport in 1936, while women's basketball joined the Olympic programme in 1976. The same trail leads to another fact: Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. The details change, but the appeal of learning a system and trying again is remarkably persistent.
