A strange little side quest
Put Hockey next to the history of puzzles and a few unexpected connections appear. Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. The same trail leads to another fact: Archery was already on the Olympic programme in 1900, boxing joined the modern Games in 1904, and basketball became a medal sport in 1936. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
