A strange little side quest
The fun part of looking behind Fantasy Heroes is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. By 1987, fantasy role-playing had become a major computer-game direction, with Zelda, licensed Dungeons & Dragons games and other story-led adventures expanding the form. A second detail makes the picture even better: Chess changed dramatically in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries when the queen became the board's most powerful piece. That is the kind of background detail that makes another attempt at Fantasy Heroes feel a bit more connected to the history of play.
