A strange little side quest
Extreme Billiards may feel immediate, but the ideas around action games have been evolving for a very long time. Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn electronic games from an arcade curiosity into mainstream entertainment. It also connects to a different milestone: Archery was already on the Olympic programme in 1900, boxing joined the modern Games in 1904, and basketball became a medal sport in 1936. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
