Elite Squad may feel immediate, but the ideas around strategy games have been evolving for a very long time. Modern chess traces back to the Indian game chaturanga, recorded around the sixth century and built around pieces representing parts of an army. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: Midway's Gun Fight from 1975 was the first arcade video game to use a microprocessor. That is the kind of background detail that makes another attempt at Elite Squad feel a bit more connected to the history of play.
