A strange little side quest
Zoom out from Dear Edmund for a moment and the timeline gets surprisingly deep. SimCity grew out of Will Wright's enjoyment of the map editor he had built for an earlier game; the act of shaping a city became the game itself. A second detail makes the picture even better: Early computer role-playing games helped turn rules, inventories, exploration and character progression into systems that could support long-form digital adventures. That is the kind of background detail that makes another attempt at Dear Edmund feel a bit more connected to the history of play.
