A strange little side quest
Counter Craft: Battle Royale may feel immediate, but the ideas around puzzles have been evolving for a very long time. Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984 after drawing inspiration from pentomino puzzles, then simplified the idea around shapes made from four squares. There is another connection worth keeping in the same mental pocket: Doom changed game design and distribution in 1993 by separating its engine from content and spreading widely through shareware. The screen is modern; the urge to test skill, pattern and timing definitely is not.
