A strange little side quest
Brutal Wanderer may feel immediate, but the ideas around role-playing games have been evolving for a very long time. Early computer role-playing games helped turn rules, inventories, exploration and character progression into systems that could support long-form digital adventures. Another piece of context lands nicely beside it: Atari's Gran Trak 10 from 1974 is recognized as the first arcade racing video game. That gives Brutal Wanderer a little more company than it first appears to have.
