A strange little side quest
Before the next round of Bloons Tower Defense, here is a piece of the bigger picture. Games resembling checkers were being played thousands of years ago; evidence of related games reaches back to around 1600 BC. It also connects to a different milestone: Street Fighter II, released in 1991, turned head-to-head arcade fighting into a worldwide phenomenon and helped define the modern fighting-game genre. It is a good reminder that simple game mechanics can carry a surprising amount of history.
