A strange little side quest
The fun part of looking behind 3D Maze Ball is seeing how many older ideas are still alive in modern play. Arthur Wynne published a diamond-shaped 'Word-Cross' in the New York World on December 21, 1913; the name later shifted to 'Cross-Word' and then 'crossword'. And the history keeps stacking up: A major archery competition held at Finsbury in England in 1583 drew about 3,000 participants. That history is one reason familiar mechanics can still feel new when they are recombined well.
